Carpe Diem went through many editing stages before it reached the version that you can choose to download. Originally it was edited in a very traditional manner...on film....on a 8 plate Flatbed Steenbeck. This particular Steenbeck was real nice and had 2 picture heads, which makes life a whole lot easier. The dialogue was dubed in by the actors as they watched a rough edit of the film.
The whole movie was cut, along with 4 magstock audio tracks(music, his voice, her voice, sfx music & end music). The film had been projected many times through the use of a double system projecter....a real nightmare to get to work well.
It eventually came time to get the negative cut and strike a print or two. After giving it much thought, we decided against spending the money to finish it on film for many reasons.....realistic distribution (no one would ever see it).....no cutting edge value....would cost a lot to finish on film. We decided to get a decent transfer to tape and finish it that way, so at least more people would have access to possibly seeing it. We transfered the original Negative to Betacam-SP at WRS.... re-edited a video version offline.....re-worked the audio, using all sorts of crazy methods to put it in sync, and added an ambience track (you can tell in the tape version)....and eventually did a traditional On-line edit at a local place, David's Photo. Dave was pretty cool and only charged us about $150 for 3-4 hous of time.
The version you get to download was digitized from Betacam-SP on a Media 100 non-linear editing system and then reduced and compressed using CoSa After Effects.
